Quick And Easy Solution: Can You Freeze Fried Chicken

September 10, 2016

I love to order large buckets of fried chicken from fast food stores because my family loves them too much. But what to do with the leftovers? Can you freeze fried chicken?

Yes, you can freeze fried chicken. According to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), you can freeze any food except for canned food or shell eggs. Cooked meat and poultry tend to retain their quality shorter than their raw counterparts because moisture disappears during cooking.

If you like to know how to freeze your fried chicken leftovers and thaw them for another great consumption, then continue reading below.

1-Preparing Fried Chicken for the Freezer

Before you store your fried chicken leftovers, you need to prepare to cool and wrap them properly.

Cool down the fried chicken

You should let the fried chicken cool down before you put them in the freezer or you risk increasing the freezer’s temperature. When cooling down the fried chicken, never let it go over 2 hours because you may also put the food at risk for spoilage.

Wrap the chicken

Use a freezer wrap, like this one, to wrap the pieces of chicken properly. Make sure that all the chicken pieces are covered well to prevent them from freezer burn. If you want to put another layer of wrapping, you may do so, but it may be unnecessary. Use aluminum foil to double wrap the chicken.

2-Storing Fried Chicken in Containers or Freezer Bags

After the chicken are all wrapped up, you can now place them in an airtight container or a freezer bag. Storing them in these containers will help the fried chicken retain its moisture. They also serve as an extra layer of protection from freezer burn.

Freezer-Safe Airtight Containers

If you choose to pack your fried chicken in airtight containers, make sure that they’re freezer-safe and BPA-free. You might want to consider reusable containers. Choose containers that are airtight so you can be sure that your food will be protected from freezer burn.

In placing pieces of fried chicken in a container, make sure that each piece lies flat on the bottom surface. Don’t overlap the chicken pieces. Put the lid on and make sure that it’s tightly closed.

Don’t stack the containers or your fried chicken will not freeze properly. You can only stack the containers when you find that the pieces of fried chicken are fully frozen.

Freezer bag

A freezer bag, just like Ziploc, keeps your fried chicken safe from freezer burn while it keeps them fresh and full of flavor. It features a Smart Zip seal that allows you to hear and feel the bag seal from end-to-end.

Put the freezer bag on a flat surface. Be sure to put the sharp edges of the chicken in an upright position to protect the bag from damage. Close the bag and make sure it is securely sealed.

It is advisable to store the fried chicken in the coldest part of the freezer, which is often in the very back. Like the containers, never put the freezer bags on top of each other. When you find that all of the fried chicken pieces are fully frozen, put the freezer bags in an upright position.

3- Labeling Freezer Bags/Containers

You can help yourself remember the shelf life of your frozen fried chicken accurately if you put the date when they first went into the freezer. Based on the freezer storage chart DA, fried chicken can last up to 4 months in the freezer.

You can use a marker pen to write the date in the container or freezer bag. Do this before you put the fried chicken into the container or freezer bag, since it might be a hard to write on it after all the chicken are already inside.

If you would like a more convenient way of labeling the bags/containers, you may uselabeling sticker.

4-Thawing Frozen Fried Chicken

Frozen foods may be defrosted in the refrigerator, in the microwave, or under cold running water. It’s never advisable to thaw food at room temperature because it encourages the growth of bacteria, as the surface of the frozen food thaws more quickly than within.
You may reheat the frozen fried chicken in the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for around 20 minutes. You may also thaw them in the refrigerator by letting them sit overnight. Now, that you’re fried chicken is thawed, you can reheat them in the oven, like this.

Freezing fried chicken is a practical way to save money and minimize food waste. Best of all, it’s very simple to follow. Give it a try before getting rid of your leftovers and you will be pleasantly surprised.
